Friends and Neighbors:
Summer is here! These past few weeks, I have been honored to attend high school graduations across the district. Watching so many promising young students celebrate such a tremendous achievement inspires me, and reminds me why we do this work.
As your state representative, I want to use my office to fight for the needs of our community in Austin, but I also want to use the resources and connections at our disposal to help North Houston families grow, thrive and achieve big dreams. Congratulations to the high school seniors at: MacArthur, Aldine, La Promesa, Hall Success Academy, Blanson CTE, Avalos P-TECH and Sam Houston MSTC. I am so proud of you.
The start of summer, however, isn’t only a time for celebration. For some children, it’s a time of insecurity. Without the free breakfast and lunch programs provided during the regular school year, many families struggle to get by without that critical resource.
Many of you may remember the disappointment we experienced in 2025 when Governor Abbott vetoed the funding my colleagues and I secured to bring the “Summer EBT” program to Texas, which would have provided eligible families $40 per month per child in the summer months to help feed kids. Make no mistake – this effort is not over, and I am continuing to fight to bring these needed dollars into our communities.
In the meantime, our local schools are partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help provide summer meals for students in need. Earlier this week, I joined No Kids Hungry and Aldine ISD at Escamilla Elementary for a kickoff event and resource fair to help connect families with available summer meals programs. Sincerely,
