Dear Friends,
The last few weeks have felt like a nightmare in Houston. On July 7th, in the East End of Houston, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed by officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mr. Araujo was a construction worker, father, husband and member of our community. I am praying for his surviving family. This hits close to home for me, and I know it cuts deep for many of my neighbors and friends who also come from mixed status families, or who worry about being pulled over based on the color of their skin.
I stand firmly alongside my fellow elected officials and community advocates in their demands for a thorough, independent investigation of this tragedy. The public deserves full transparency about what happened that morning.
I encourage everyone – regardless of your background – to stay educated about their Constitutional rights to help keep yourselves and your families safe. This is a difficult time for our city, but I know this is a time where Houstonians will come together to push for justice and for change.
This is a moment for both grief and resolve. I know our community will meet it with both.
