Dear Friends,
As summer winds down, September brings one of my favorite times of the year: back-to-school. That means cooler temperatures, lots of activity in the community, and of course Friday Night Lights. Every child in our community deserves to start the school year set up for success. This year, I was honored to join local partners like Vida City Church and Buckner International in providing back-to-school needs for students and their families.
Throughout August, my office partnered with community organizations for several local events across House District 140 to connect neighborhood families with the supplies and resources ahead of the 2026/2027 school year. We kicked things off with Ms. Mireles’ Safe Walk Home Northside Initiative at Marshall Middle School, where we identified safe routes home for our kids. We also joined forces with Buckner Houston for their Annual Back to School Event, helping over 1,000 families gear up for the school year.
As a proud product of our neighborhood public schools and a graduate of MacArthur High School, I know firsthand the importance of a quality public education for our youth. Our local schools are the heart of the Houston community, and our students deserve fully funded classrooms and safe learning environments who have the robust support they need to thrive. I remain deeply committed to fighting every day in the Texas House to ensure our public schools receive the full funding they deserve so every child in District 140 can reach their full potential.
Whether your child is taking their very first steps into kindergarten or gearing up for their senior year, I want to wish all of our students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe and happy school year ahead. Let’s make this the best school year yet!
In solidarity,
